2022 Revisions

Major Updates

  • General
    • Updated all links, references, and form thumbnails to the new Road Design Manual and QC/QA Manual.
    • Updated various ASTM and AASHTO material and testing references.
    • Updated the term PoDI to include Involvement rather than the former Interest per FHWA guidance.
    • Replaced the term Fracture Critical Member and the acronym FCM with Non-redundant Steel Tension Member and NSTM per most recent FHWA guidance.
  • 101.3 - Added wiki specific manual update information, removed old information, and moved section from 101.4.6 to 101.3.
  • 102.5.1 - Changed Project Development Process to reference the Bridge specific one.
  • 102.5.5 - Added Concept Plans to the chronology of submissions.
  • 103.6.2 - Section has been rewritten to include more abutment types and update selection preferences.
  • 103.9 - ABC section rewrite.
  • 104.1.5 - Updated topographic data and survey information.
  • 104.2 - Updated to current SIR.
  • 104.2.4 - Updated hydrologic analysis method selection guidance.
  • 104.2.5 - Added evacuation route criteria.
  • 104.2.6 - Revised confidence interval discussion and guidance.
  • 104.3.4.7 - Updated to most recent publication of HEC-25.
  • 104.4.4 - Clarified general scour analysis guidance for rigid frames and substructure footings.
  • 104.4.5 - Revised scour countermeasure design guidance for rigid frames.
  • 104.4.5.1 - Added guidance for larger riprap alternatives.
  • 104.5.4 - Revised pump diversion guidance.
  • 104.5.2 - Removed outdated riprap sizing figure. Updated bank protection references.
  • 104.8 - Removed outdated reference to PDM.
  • 104.9 - Updated References.
  • 106.3.1.2 - Added preference to minimize differential deflection between beams and warning about differential deflection at time of deck pour.
  • 106.4.2.4 - Added statement about differential deflection between beams when calculating haunch dimensions.
  • 106.4.2.4 - Corrected haunch reinforcement verbiage.
  • 106.5.2 - Added guidance on slip-forming barrier.
  • 106.8.7.1.3 - Changed paint colors for structural steel.
  • 106.8.9.1.2 - Updated wind loading design requirements.
  • 106.8.9.1.3 - Updated fit condition guidance for cross-frames.
  • 106.9.7 - Inserted new section to refer to the new section 205.9.2.3.2b.
  • 106.10.9.1 - Deleted language redundant with the Standard Specifications and welding code.
  • 107.3 - Updated sub-foundation concrete depth to rock.
  • 107.3.2 - Added guidance for spread footings partially bearing on rock.
  • 107.3.5.3 - Adjusted MSEW step heights.
  • 107.4.1 - Rewrite of Semi-integral and Integral abutment sections.
  • 107.6.1 - Added guardrail clearances from MSE walls.
  • 108 - Replaced all of section 108 with reference to the BLRM.
  • 109.11.3.3 - Added splash zone definition.
  • 205.9.2.3.2b - Added departmental preferences for tensile stress limits of prestressed concrete beams.
  • Section 300 revisions:

Minor Updates

  • Adjusted Table of Contents for new and moved sections
  • Section 300:
    • Renamed all pdf files to follow naming convention Detail XXX.XX.pdf.
    • Uploaded all dgn files following same naming convention as pdf files.
    • Categorized all pdf and dgn files in Category:300 - Typical Bridge Design Details.
  • Various formatting fixes
  • Renamed (wiki move) articles for consistency (redirects maintain current links):
    • Moved 101- Introduction to 101 - Introduction.
    • Moved 103 – Bridge Geometry and Structure Type Selection to 103 - Bridge Geometry and Structure Type Selection (hyphen).
    • Moved 104 – Hydrology and Hydraulics to 104 - Hydrology and Hydraulics (hyphen).

Pre-2022 Revisions

Before the 2022 revision, the manual was maintained in PDF format revisions were tracked in an Excel spreadsheet.
